Documentary heritage reflects the diversity of languages, peoples and cultures. It is the mirror of the world and its memory. But this memory is fragile. Every day, irreplaceable parts of this memory disappear for ever.
- The Memory of the World Register lists documentary heritage which has been identified by the International Advisory Committee in its meetings in Tashkent (September 1997), in Vienna (June 1999) and in Cheongju City (June 2001) and endorsed by the Director-General of UNESCO as corresponding the selection criteria for world significance.

|Third Meeting of the International Advisory Committee (IAC),Tashkent, Uzbekistan, 29 September - 1 October 1997. This Meeting was preceded by the first Central Asian Regional Consultative Meeting of the Memory of the World Programme at which recommendations were agreed on priorities for regional documentary heritage resource development. Following the IAC meeting two treasures of Uzbekistan's documentary heritage, Holy Koran Mushaf of Othman and the Collection of the Al-Biruni Institute of Oriental Studies, were inscribed on the Memory of the World Register.|
