The chair of UNESCO on journalism and communication of KazNU was
set up on the 14th of May in 1996 on the basis of an agreement on mutual co-operation
between the Kazakh State National University and UNESCO.
The chair of UNESCO was established with the purpose of spreading and mutual exchange of
information on international scientific co-operation in the system of World organisation
of the chair of UNESCO - ОРБИКОМ (ORBICOM), render support to scientific
institution of KazNU on research of theory and practice of modern journalism, deeper study
of Mass Media in Central Asia and Kazakhstan, in the spheres of ensuring delivery of the
documents in the field of journalism and communication.
The chair of UNESCO carries out the following functions:
1. Develops scientific researches in the field of journalism.
2. Holds round tables, meetings with foreign journalists and journalists from our
country, with the experts in the field of mass communication and information process, with
the foreign experts - advisers in the sphere of Mass Media.
3. Issues " The Bulletin of KazNU. Scientific articles in the field of
journalism and mass communication are published in series " Journalism ".
4. The chair of UNESCO together with the faculty of journalism holds scientific
conferences devoted to the problem of theory and practice of Mass Media in Kazakhstan and
in Central Asia.
5. Participates in the various researches, pedagogical and creative grants of
international funds and organisations.
6. Co-operates with various universities, research centres in Kazakhstan, near and
distant foreign countries.
7. Conducts Internet-training, training seminars on new information technologies,
Web-journalism, Mass Media management, PR and advertising.
8. Gives presentations of the new books, professional editions, various
international programs, grants, creative competitions for journalists, teachers and
students.
